Virginia residents who have lost someone due to drinking and driving will likely want to see that individual held accountable to the fullest extent of the law, and rightly so. However, any person that is accused of criminal charges has the right to full trial and is considered innocent until proven otherwise.
A Virginia man is currently waiting for his day in court after being accused of drinking and driving in an accident that killed two siblings from Lynchburg.
The accident occurred over the July 4 weekend. The man was reportedly driving in the wrong direction on Route 460 when he hit a car. The car that he hit reportedly burst into flames and killed two people who happened to be siblings.
He faces two counts of aggravated manslaughter and a DUI, according to a recent news report.
The Rustburg man had been scheduled to appear in court Dec. 5. At this hearing, a Prince Edward County judge was expected to rule on whether a grand jury would hear the case. Instead, a clerk for the court has reportedly stated that the case has been postponed until February, according to the report.
Although surviving family members will certainly want accountability after this tragic accident, the country has a justice system that must be followed in due process in order to ensure that all citizens have their rights maintained. The prosecution will be required to provide evidence beyond a reasonable doubt to find this man guilty of the charges.
